    A Purpose of Life

I was trained and have been using the brushes to write Chinese calligraphy for years. However, I didn’t start my art journey until 1998.  I first recall being drawn to paint when I saw an early light illuminating the treetops on a winter morning.  Ten years have passed, yet it seems that the journey has just begun.

At the beginning I was painting what I could see.  I tried to catch the real look.  Later, I adopted the Theory of Feeling into painting.   Gradually, I entered the realm of creating.

Masters of the East and West, of the ancient and modern, show us the endless possibilities of what one can do with the blank space.  Innovating often provides the reason and challenge for each piece; blending the aesthetics of the East and West offer a whole new world to those who are nourished by both cultures.

The Chinese embrace poetry, calligraphy and painting, so called the three perfections, in one surface. It adds literature or philosophy to the viewers’ mind and expands what a painting can offer.  My very good friend and mentor, Mr. Ling Chong Ming, had written many poems to elaborate my paintings.

After having tried many conventional media including ink and watercolor on rice paper, silk paper and regular watercolor paper, pastel, acrylic, and floating ink, in 2006 I started to use house paint.  In 2008, spray paint has been added to my studio.  As more techniques develop, more innovative ideas continue to thrive. In the past two years I have practiced and created more than 300 paintings.  I learned that innovation starts with dreaming and is completed by doing.

I have been fortunate to be exposed to the best of two cultures.  Now I am right at my humble beginning and painting against time.  Matisse once said, ‘… a painter’s best spokesman is his work.’  This is my first painting album to present to the public.

One hundred and eight paintings have been collected in this album, designed and made by E-graphic master Miss Ou, to whom I owe a great ‘thank you’.
